I’ve always been a fan of long hikes and beach volleyball, but this year I’ve already gotten sunburned twice and it’s only June. I used sunscreen, but maybe not enough? It’s frustrating because I feel like I’m doing the right thing, but I still end up red and peeling. Do you guys have any solid routines or must-dos when it comes to staying sun-safe without missing out on the fun outdoors?

Totally get what you mean. I do a lot of kayaking and trail runs, and I used to think SPF 30 once in the morning was enough—spoiler: it’s not! A dermatologist once told me that we often under-apply sunscreen (like half the recommended amount), and forget key areas like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet. Now I apply 15–20 minutes before going out, reapply every 2 hours (more if sweating), and wear a light UPF shirt and a big ugly hat I’ve come to love. Also, staying in the shade between 11 am–3 pm helps a lot.

I recently came across this really well-written guide that breaks it all down, especially in terms of sun protection for different skin types and activity levels: understanding chromatography — worth a look, even if just for checking what you might be missing in your routine.

That link is great, thanks for sharing . I’ve started using UV-protective sleeves for biking and I swear they make a difference. They’re not the coolest-looking, but my arms are finally not lobster red by the end of the week.

One thing that I’ve found helpful is setting aside some time for self-reflection every day. It keeps me grounded and helps me stay focused on what’s important. I also think it’s crucial to be informed about the platforms and services we use regularly. For example, reading reviews can offer valuable insights. It’s always good to know what others think before diving in.
